Soline – A Hidden Gem of Mljet
Soline is a charming fishing village located by the serene Soline Channel, at the entrance to the Great Lake in Mljet National Park. The settlement got its name from the Benedictines, who once produced salt by evaporating seawater in natural basins. The channel leads to the lake, where the Benedictines established their abbey, and at the entrance stands a stone cross with an inscription in Bosnian Cyrillic. The first settlers arrived in the early 19th century, and today, with around 25 inhabitants, Soline offers visitors tranquility, an authentic island experience, and close proximity to natural beauty. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking peace, nature, and history in one place.
